Blood Stasis

Blood stasis is a kind of pathological blockage in blood circulation. Normally the blood is propelled by the flow of Heart-Qi in the vessels. Blood circulation can be stagnated or slowed down by certain factors. If so, it will lead to retention of blood in the vessels or viscera, causing stasis. It is important to note that blood stasis should not be confused with Qi stagnation.

The main clinical manifestations of are:

  • Dark complexion
  • Purple lips and/or finger nails
  • Fixed stabbing pain
  • Purple tongue

These are general symptoms of stasis, however, and may vary with reference to specific organs.

The organ most likely to be affected is the Liver, however,  the Heart, Lungs, Stomach, Intestines and Uterus may also be affected.
