Wei Ling Xian

Wei Ling Xian (Radix Clematidis) is from the root and rhizome of the perennial trailing shrub Clematis chinensis Osbeck. or C. hexapetala Pall. or C. manshurica Rupr., family Ranunculaceae. The medicinal material is dug and collected in the autumn, cleaned and then dried in the sun before use.

Properties and Functions: Wei Ling Xian is pungent and salty in flavour, and warm in nature. It expels Wind and Dampness, dredges the channel, reduces phlegm and pathogenic water and it can also help to soften fish bones trapped in the throat.

Indications: It is applied clinically for:

  • Pain due to Wind-Damp Bi-Syndrome, especially moving Bi-Syndrome with preponderant wind, manifesting as soreness and general pain of the joints, tendons and bones which have no fixed location and are wandering.
  • Accumulation and distension in the middle jiao.
  • Fish bones lodged in the throat.

Dosage: 5 – 10g

Cautions and Contra-Indications: Use with caution in patients with deficient Qi and Blood, or those patients who are debilitated.
