Pao Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Praeparata) is sourced from the dried rhizome of Zingiber officinale (Willed.) Rosc., family Zingiberaceae. After drying, it is cut into pieces and stir-baked with a strong fire until the surface becomes burnt-yellow.

Properties and Functions: Pao Jiang is bitter and astringent in flavour, and warm in nature. It warms the channels to stop bleeding and warms the middle jiao to relieve pain.
Indications: It is clinically indicated for Cold-deficiency type haematemesis, haematochezia and metrorrhagia. Additionally, it is used for abdominal pain and diarrhoea of Cold-deficiency type and also postpartum deficiency of blood and Cold stagnation. It is more effective in treating lower abdominal pain than Gan Jiang.
