Niu Xi

Niu Xi – Achyranthes is derived from the root of Achyrantes bidentata Blume (Huai Niu Xi) and C. officinalis Kuan (Chuan Niu Xi). The roots are dried and used in their dry form or stir-baked with wine.

Category: Blood Regulating / Blood Invigorating.

Common Name: It is most commonly known as Ox Knee. Other common names are: Achyranthes Root (Huai) and Cyathula Root (Chuan).

Channels Entered: Liver and Kidney.

Properties and Functions: Both varieties  are Sour, Bitter and Neutral. The main functions are activating the Blood and promoting circulation, removing Blood stasis and nourishing the Liver and Kidney. Additonal functions include dispelling Wind and draining Damp, as well as strengthening bones and muscles. It can also be used to induce diuresis and ensure correct downward flow of blood.

Indications:

  • Blood stasis syndrome with irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea and abdominal pain.
  • Pain and weakness of the lower back and knees due to deficiency. Also used in treatment of Damp-Bi Syndrome of lower back and knees.
  • Nosebleed, vomiting of blood, toothache, dizziness and headache.

Dosage: Huai 6 – 15g and Chuan 4 – 9g

Cautions and Contraindications: Both are contraindicated during pregnancy and in cases with irregular and/or excessive menstruation. Using Bai Qian with Huai Niu Xi is cautioned against.
