Ma Huang Tang Ma Huang Tang

English Name: Ephedra Decoction.

Category: Exterior Releasing.

Functions: Induces perspiration to relieve exterior pathogenic factors, disperses and opens the Lung to relieve asthma and wheezing, stops coughing.

Indications: Ma Huang Tang is used for exterior syndrome due to exterior Wind-Cold. This is marked by aversion to cold, chills, fever, headache, cough, wheezing and asthma, general muscle aching and lack of sweating.

Tongue and Pulse: The tongue has a thin, white coating and the pulse is floating and tight.

Ingredients:

  • Ma Huang [Herba Ephedrae] – 9g
  • Gui Zhi [Ramulus Cinnamomi] – 6g
  • Xing Ren [Semen Armeniaccae Amarum] – 6g
  • Zhi Gan Cao [Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparatae] – 3g

Cautions and Contra-Indications: Contra-Indicated for patients diagnosed with exterior Wind-Cold syndrome WITH sweating due to strong diaphoretic effect of Ma Huang. Use with caution in patients with hypertension and heart conditions.
