Huo Ma Ren (Semen Cannabis) is from the flowering buds of Cannabis sativa, family Moraceae. The medicinal material is collected in the autumn when the buds are ripe. They are dried in the sun and then broken up to release the seeds. The seeds are used in their crude, unprocessed form.

Properties and Functions: Huo Ma Ren is sweet in flavour and neutral in nature. It moistens the intestines and nourishes Yin.
Indications: It is used clinically for the following conditions:
- Constipation due to Dryness of the intestine, particularly the elderly or pregnant women who are deficient in body fluids and Blood.
- Constipation due to pathological Heat damaging Yin or constitutional Yin deficiency.
Dosage: 10 – 30 g. The seeds are usually broken before adding to a decoction.
Cautions and Contra-Indications: Excessive use can lead to nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
