Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis) is from the Rhizome of Coptis chinensis Franch. and C. deltoidea or Coptis teetoides. Clinically it is used in either its raw form or after being stir-baked.

Properties and Functions: Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis) is bitter and cold. Its functions include:
- Clearing Heat.
- Drying Dampness.
- Sedating Fire and clearing fire toxins.
- Stops bleeding.
- Topical use for clearing toxins.
Indications: The main indications for Huang Lian are:
- Damp-Heat in the Stomach or intestines accompanied with diarrhoea or dysentery.
- High fever, irritability and delirium with red tongue and full, rapid pulse. Also with sore red eyes and sore throat.
- Nosebleed or blood in the urine, stool or vomiting due to chaotic movement of Heat in the blood.
- Topical application for sore, red eyes, tongue and/or mouth ulcerations and additionally boils and carbuncles.
Dosage: 2 – 10g
Cautions and Contra-Indications: Huang Lian antagonises Ju Hua, Xuan Shen, Bai Xian Pi and Bai Jiang Can. It counteracts the functions of Kuan Dong Hua and Niu Xi. When using this herb, patients should avoid consuming pork. It is contra-indicated for Cold, Yang deficiency or Yin deficiency. Specific patterns include Cold from deficiency of Spleen and Stomach.
