Bai Zhu

Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) is from the Rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz, family Compositae. After harvesting it is sliced and dried. It is used in its raw form or after stir-baking.

Properties and Functions: Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) is bitter, sweet and warm in nature. Its main functions are:

  • Invigorates the Spleen and benefits Qi.
  • Eliminates dampness and promotes diuresis.
  • Stops sweating.
  • Calms and soothes the foetus.

Indications: The main indications include:

  • Deficiency of Spleen-Qi and Stomach-Qi. Typically presenting as diarrhoea, fatigue, pale complexion and lack of appetite.
  • Oedema due to Spleen deficiency and phlegm retention. This is an accumulation of fluids affecting digestion, reduced urination and damp-pain obstruction.
  • Spontaneous sweating due to Spleen and Qi deficiency.
  • Restless foetus disorder.

Dosage: 6 – 15g

Cautions and Contra-Indications: Bai Zhu is contra-indicated in cases of:

  • Internal heat from Yin deficiency.
  • Thirst due to exhausted fluids.
