Bai Zhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae) is derived from the root of perennial herbaceous plant Angelica dahurica (Fisch. ex Hoffm.) benth. et Hook. f. or Angelica dahuriea (Fisch. ex Hoffm) Benth. et Hook. f. var. formosana (Boiss.) Shan. et Yuan of family Umbelliferae. It is grown in multiple locations in China including Henan, Hubei and Sichuan. It is harvested in the summer when the leaves are yellow.

Properties and Functions: Bai Zhi is pungent in flavour and warm in nature. Its primary function is to release the exterior, expel Wind, eliminate Dampness. It also works to:
- Calm pain, reduce swelling and expel pus.
- Alleviate discharge.
Indications: Clinically used for externally contracted Wind-Cold manifesting as headaches, suborbital pain, nasal congestion and toothache; Early stages of superficial sores and carbuncles; Vaginal discharge due to Cold-Damp in the lower jiao.
Dosage: 3 – 9g
Cautions and Contra-Indications: Contra-indicated in cases of deficient Yin or Blood-Heat.
