Bai Jiang Cao (Herba Patriniae) is derived from the root and stem of Patrinia Scabiosaefolia Fisch, family Valerianacecae. The medicinal material is collected during autumn. It is then washed and dried in the shade. It is cut into segments and used in its’ crude form.

Common Name: White Patrinia Flower.

Channels Entered: Liver, Stomach and Large Interstine.

Properties and Functions: Bai Jiang Cao is pungent and bitter in flavour and slightly cold in nature. Its principle functions are to clear heat, eliminate toxins and drain pus. It is also used to break up Blood stasis and relieve pain.

Indications: It is used in the treatment of intestinal abscesses, pulmonary abscesses and surface sores due to Fire-toxins such as carbuncles. Other uses include pain and obstruction due to Heat-induced Blood stasis, particularly in the abdomen and chest; post-partum pain; post-operative pain.

Dosage: 6 – 15g

Cautions and Contra-Indications: It should be avoided in cases with deficiency of Spleen and Stomach manifesting as poor appetite and diarrhoea.
