The Whittington Hospital NHS Pain Clinic and Labour Ward

WhittingtonThe Whittington Hospital acupuncture pain clinic is one of the first integrated services to be offered by the NHS England using both conventional medicine and acupuncture to offer pain relief. The clinic opened in 2002 and now refers up to 50 patients a week to receive acupuncture treatment from the staff and students of Asanté Academy. The acupuncture clinic is based in the out-patients department at the Whittington Hospital and treats everything from chronic back pain and migraine to arthritic and musculoskeletal problems. This new and innovative project for the NHS has been such a success that it now runs on four sessions during the week. As a result, referrals from care professionals are increasing and with that the number of patients using the service.

As well as providing an excellent service to NHS patients, this clinic also provides Asanté Academy, Middlesex University students and private students with

Daylabour 1

a unique opportunity to experience treating people from a wide variety of backgrounds in a testing and challenging clinical setting.

Since 2006, specialist practitioners from Asanté Academy of Chinese Medicine have teamed up with the health staff at the Labour Ward day unit at the Whittington hospital to provide an innovative antenatal care for the patients. The project began as a three month pilot scheme with Asanté Academy practitioners and is now available 5 days a week, 9am to 5pm.

This special form of acupuncture service is able to provide drug-free intervention in the treatment of pregnancy related conditions such as nausea and vomiting, low back/pelvic/sciatica pain and stress during pregnancy and repositioning of the foetus. During labour itself it can help to improve contractions, alleviate pain and anxiety, and expedite delivery. At the end of pregnancy, a natural option to encourage labour is offered, called Acupuncture Birth Preparation.

North Middlesex Hospital Pain Clinic

nmdx1An Acupuncture Pain Clinic has been set up at North Middlesex Hospital which is run by Asanté Academy doctors and students to offer NHS patients with chronic pain the chance to receive acupuncture. Patients are referred to the clinic by North Middlesex Hospital Pain Consultants and the service is paid for by NHS England. This is another example of the partnership of Asanté Academy and the NHS providing integrated services using both conventional and complementary medicine to offer patients a greater range of healthcare. The Pain Clinic, which runs on Fridays, has proved to be very successful and sees many patients with several conditions such as musculoskeletal pain problems and migraine.

Royal Free Hospital NHS Acupuncture Pain Management Clinic

Royal Free

Royal Free Hospital and Asanté Academy joined forces to collaborate on a new Acupuncture Pain Management Clinic in September 2009. This NHS acupuncture clinic used to run every Friday at the hospital premises and since October 2014 we have been receiving the hospital patients at our main clinic in Highgate.

Acupuncture is more and more accepted within Western Medicine and the NHS as an effective and valuable treatment for pain conditions. Royal Free is the third hospital in London to join forces with Asanté Academy to provide acupuncture services for the relief of chronic pain. Professor Ke, Asanté Academy’s Principal, is optimistic that more hospitals will work with Asanté Academy in the future.
