Glaucoma

Glaucoma is caused by a build-up of fluid in the area between the cornea and the lens of the eye, due to blockage of the channel or the tissues through which fluid drains. This increases pressure on the eyeball, affecting tiny blood vessels at the back of the eye where nerve fibres from the retina enter the optic nerve, and leading to blurred vision.

If the problem is acute, seek help from a Western eye specialist immediately, because the pressure can build up in the eye causing serious problems and possibly even blindness.

In Chinese Medicine diagnosis, glaucoma is connected with the liver, gallbladder and stomach, and sometimes the kidneys also. Glaucoma is also identified with weakness in the liver and kidneys combined with heat and fire in the gallbladder and the liver. Fire ascending causes the eye problems, plus headaches and sickness. Chinese Medicine herbs will work internally, by helping to strengthen the kidneys and liver, reducing the fire and clearing the phlegm. Herbs and acupuncture will increase the speed of recovery and prevent recurrence. A famous remedy in Chinese medicine is called Dragon Bladder Purge Liver Decoction.
